Tom Green County Declares Disaster Precaution as New World Screwworm Threat Grows

Tom Green County commissioners have approved a local disaster declaration related to New World screwworm concerns. County officials stress the move is precautionary and does not mean a widespread outbreak is underway. The action follows the confirmation of an active case in cattle near Grape Creek and Carlsbad earlier this month. County Judge Lane Carter says the declaration helps document expenses and could make future response costs eligible for reimbursement if needed. Officials say they are taking proactive steps as the parasite continues to spread in parts of Texas. A public information meeting is scheduled for June 29 at the San Angelo Fairgrounds.
