Last week. after receiving reports of shots fired in the area of Grape Creek Road
and Ute Pass, the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation
into the complaints. During the investigation, probable cause was developed to
charge Rene Ricardo Leija with the offense of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by
a Felon. Additionally, a search warrant was obtained for his residence. On Wednesday,
April 19th, investigators executed a search and arrest warrant for Leija in the 67 hundred
block of Grape Creek Road. Leija was taken into custody and the ensuing search of his
residence resulted in the recovery of potential pipe bombs. After the discovery of the
bombs, the Abilene Police Department bomb squad was summoned to the scene as well as
federal agents. The devices were secured and will be submitted to the ATF lab for further
examination. Leija was then charged with possession of components of explosives. Leija
remains in the Tom Green County Jail on a 1 hundred 25 thousand dollar bond.
