During today’s San Angelo City Council meeting, members heard a report
from Charter Review Committee Chair Alan Gilbert. He said after
many discussions, they recommend keeping San Angelo as the only city
in the state to elect its Police Chief. He feels voters will not be willing to
vote to change to an appointed Chief. The committee has recommendations
on changes to require additional qualifications for someone running for
Chief, such as city residency for at least six months, serving several years
in a police supervisory position, and certain educational attainments.
If elected, they recommend aligning the term in office to be the same as
city council members, with the first term of 3 years, then four years after that.
City voters will have to vote on any changes to the position.
