Vitalant, a nonprofit blood services provider, is experiencing a critical shortage of type O blood. This organization supplies blood to approximately 900 hospitals across the U.S., including Shannon Hospital in San Angelo. The shortage is attributed to record-low donations this year, exacerbated by extreme heat and summer holidays, which has led to difficult decisions regarding blood allocation.
To address this emergency, Vitalant is urging eligible individuals, particularly those with type O blood, to donate. Each donation can save up to three lives. Donors must be at least sixteen years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Visit vitalant.org to learn more and register to donate.
