Yesterday San Angelo City Manager Daniel Valenzuela released
a statement regarding the City’s stance on local Police salaries after recent
criticism of officers’ pay scales and working conditions. He says the city
staff is meeting with police representatives, working to develop a long-
term solution to address higher pay for public safety officers. He says the
city has increased pay, but not enough to keep up with the salary needs
for officers. Also, the city and state face a shortage of officers and more
competition among cities to hire officers at higher pay. Also, he says the
state has a limit on increases to property taxes, limiting the options for
salary increases.
